Healthy yet Delicious Apple Oatmeal

This takes some time so I’d recommend doing it the night before or on a Sunday if time (like many of us) tends to be short. If you are looking to mix up your breakfast routine and include a healthy option – check this out. Why steel cut oats? I love it because it fills me up and I don’t get hungry for a long time.  Check out this easy chart to see why.

Apple Walnut Steel Cut Oatmeal
Steel Cut Oatmeal
1 Apple
Handful of Walnuts
Cinnamon (possibly sugar or Penzey’s Cinnamon Sugar mix)

Depending on the size of the batch you want to make  you may need more or less. I followed the recipe for a whole batch (I usually cut it in half.) This way there are plenty of leftovers for breakfast that week. If you put each on in an individual container, all you have to do it grab it and go in the morning.


STEP 1: Get the Steel Cut Oats cooking, they take about 20 minutes, read the directions and don’t forget to stir more towards the end.


STEP 2: Grate the apple. Don’t slice or chop, this makes a real difference in how it tastes.


STEP 3: Chop yer nuts – walnuts in my opinion makes the most sense with this flavor combination


STEP 4: Combine apple & walnuts with steel cut oats in bowl top it off with milk and stir


STEP 5: Top with cinnamon and sugar mix the whole thing up. Try some and realize how you are getting hints of apple crisp here. It’s an apple, walnut, crunchy oat flavored goodness that surprisingly fills you up quick and keeps you full for a long time and doesn’t compromise on flavor.


STEP 6: That whole batch could be consumed by five people so mix it up, and put some in a smaller dish and the rest for breakfast for the week. Don’t forget to add extra cinnamon and sugar on yours. Yum!
